The Met Ball 2015
This week we saw every celebrity under the sun out for the annual Met Ball in New York. Some outfits lovely, some.... well.... interesting. Known as "the Met Ball", the annual event at the Metropolitan Museum in New York is actually acalled the Costume Institute Gala. It is a fundraising event which serves as the opening celebration for the Insitute's annual fashion exhibit. If you were wondering why there was such a Chinese influence on many outfits, thats because this years exhibit was called "China: through the looking glass". It is usually a high fashion event with celebrities pushing the limits and being more daring. For some this was a success, others not so much...
First things first, lets just get Rihanna out the way.
We've all seen the memes that turned the outfit into a pizza or the photos of her superimposed into a frying pan because her outfit looked like an omlette. Rihanna is one of the few celebrities who showed up wearing a Chinese designer. Guo Pei created this dress and chose the canary yellow colour as it was regularly worn by Chinese Emporers throughout history. Very accurate, but still horrendous. As I said earlier, this event is an opportunity for celebrities to wear something daring and this certainly fits the criteria for "daring" but I think its safe to say this is not an outfit you could wear out for dinner on a Saturday night. Her hair looked a bit TLC in 1996 - could definitely have been better. On a positive note, for once Rihanna was not the one flashing too much flesh!
That came from arguably the three most beautiful in the world; Beyonce, Kim Kardashian West and Jennifer Lopez. Ladies you are all gorgeous and everyone knows it. You don't need to show us what you had for breakfast to prove it!
J-Lo's dress was by Versace. It featured a red sequin and bead detailed drag design which snaked around her body. The train was sheer with sequin detailing throughout. The design of the dress is beautiful and was a very interesting nod to the opening exhibit. Perhaps if this design had been put over a black base I might have been a little more fond of it. Her hair was very simple and worked really well because it didn't take away from the drama of the dress. Her makeup looked quite simple as well but she looks like she has a flash of red on her temples to tie in with the outfit. Normally this would be quite daring but it seems to have been done quite subtely and did wonders for her cheekbones!
Beyonce's dress was a Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci. It was essentially a sheer dress with detailing where she needed to be covered not much elsewhere. To be honest, I felt the style of beading looking more like something you would see in Bollywood but not everyone went with the Chinese theme. Her hair was in a high pony, slightly to the side and curled. She seems to have gone very blonde too. Though I did like her hair, it seemed a bit nineties for such a glamourous event. Her makeup was very simple with a flick of eyeliner and the only accessories she had were earrings. Someone put a picture of Beyonce and Jay-Z next to the couple from "Coming to America". Google it. Its uncanny. You'd think someone might have warned them. Or maybe that was their inspriation.
Kim Kardashian said her outfit was inspired by Cher's outfit to the very first Met Ball. It was a Roberto Cavalli gown with white beaded detailing and white feathers on the train. For Kim, this was quite modest as the dress was only sheer from the thigh down, the rest was nude underneath giving the illusion of skin. It was very similar to a black and purple Givenchy gown Beyonce wore in 2012 and I don't imagine KKW was too happy with being outdone by Bey on the nudity stakes. Let the feud continue...
Kendall Jenner was trying to join this club as well. If it wasn't for the side boob I would have absolutely loved her dress. As the new face of Calvin Klein, she decided to wear their green crystal encrusted dress with green ties on the side from the hip up. Again, she didn't go with the Chinese theme but I think the choice of colour was quite unusual. As a model, we all know Kendall would look great in just about anything but I think the high neck and the cut made her look super tall and slim. How she managed to show some side boob when she doesn't really have any was quite impressive, but I would have preferred this dress without the open sides.
These are probably some of the most talked about gowns but my favourites were the more subtle outfits...
I loved Helen Mirren's dress. A bright red Dolce and Gabanna dress with laser cut details. The colour stood out, it was classy, elegant and something quite brave for a woman of 69. Fave!
GiGi Hadid went for red as well in this Diane von Furstenburg dress. Quite low cut with floral detailing on the top and a thigh high split. Sexy but classy. Her hair and makeup look so natural but glam - just enough to show you how gorgeous she really is.
My final fave is defintely one that people will not agree with me on! Emma Roberts wore an emerald green satin one shoulder gown by Ralph Lauren. Her blonde hair was slicked back in a bun and she accessorised with an art deco style belt, bracelet and earrings and black shoes and clutch. This SCREAMS 1920s art deco glamour to me, and while yes, I will agree it has certain elements of Draco Malfoy, I still love it. I may have gone for darker eyes and a more bold red lip but she has gone for a dark but more subtle look.

The men did not too shabby at the Ball this year as well. For once in my life I actually have something postive to say about Justin Beiber! His Balmain jacket was pretty gaudy - I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this on Carmella Soprano. He seemed to have attended the event with his new best pal Olivier Rousteing.

Other than the fashion there was one major thing that stuck out to me at this event. As beautiful and glamourous as everyone looked, no one looked comfortable. The likes of Beyonce and F.K. Twigs were too busy posing to stand next to their significant others. I'm sure Jay Z is used to it but Robert Pattinson looked so awkward and had no idea what to do. How do these celebs enjoy themselves when they're strapped into corsets, dragging a 12 foot train or making surethey don't have a nip slip?! Maybe that's what their assistants are for.
If you want to see more photos of the Met Ball head over to the Vogue website. They have their own list of best dressed plus many more celebs including their makeup looks.
